Have you ever stopped to consider that the credit report repair business may be just a huge fraud scamming the unaware American Consumer? This blog post has been written to delve a little deeper into what was discussed in Part 1 of "Credit Report Repair A to Z".

Many of the companies and individuals, which have bilked you he consumer, out of thousands of dollars have been put out of business and locked up for fraud. However, for every one that has been shut down it seems that three more pop up. The sad thing is when the feds or the local state has shut them down; they simply pack a suitcase and move across the state line.

In some cases they simply change the name of the company and file for a new business license. In most states it is relatively easy to get a business license and open up for business.

It is important for you to understand there are legitimate credit report repair companies. These companies will charge you a fee for doing the same thing you can do. This can be great if time is a factor. We are all aware that time is money and you might be earning more money in that time than the cost of using the legitimate credit report repair company.

But assuming that does not apply to your situation, here are some truths that you can do yourself without paying some one else to do it.

	1. Disputed Debt: If you believe the amount of the money owed, shown on your credit transcript is wrong, you have the right to challenge it. You contact the lender with a letter or phone call, they have 30 days to respond. If they fail to do so you have the right to have it removed from your credit report.

Once the 30 days have passed it is your responsibility to call the credit reporting company and request it to be removed. Be sure you have a record of when and where you contacted the lender; you will need this for the credit reporting company to remove it from your report.

	2. Bad debt shown but loan paid in full: Again if the loan has been paid off you have the right to negotiate with the lender and have it changed to "Loan Satisfied" or "Loan Paid In Full". Even though it will remain on the credit report it will show others checking your credit you made it right.

	3. Loan Negotiation: If you have failed to pay a loan on time or have defaulted on the loan, you have the right to try and make it right.

You can call the collection company or the lender and negotiate a settlement of the loan. Often times this could end up reducing the loan to pennies on the dollar. Once you have the reduced amount paid off, it will appear on your credit report as paid. Although it will reflect a reduced pay back it will show you have taken the necessary steps to try to make it right.

Folks you need to understand that the only way to do a legal credit report repair is to pay your debts. The debts you have paid late and defaulted on are going to be around for 7 years or longer. You heard right or longer being the keyword.

An example of this would be say if you have a defaulted loan in the year 2004. Normally it could drop off your credit report this year 2011. However, you started trying to clean up your credit report in 2009 and started a new pay back. Guess what? Its going to be on your credit report until 2016. But yet if you clean it up it will be for your good.

Attempting to tackle the problem of credit report repair yourself may seem a little overwhelming, however it can prove to be very rewarding in the long run.

Did you just attempt to apply for a loan for auto repairs and got refused? That is a terrible feeling and can even make you feel as if you have failed your loved ones and yourself. Right? Don't get all bent out of shape and run out to find a business to do a credit report repair for you. You could possibly find out that your in a worse condition than before you started. Read on as this blog post could possibly make you think twice before using one of these businesses.

Chances are you have seen the ads for "Legally Repair Your Credit Report", "Wipe Your Credit Report Clean In 7 Days", "Buy A New House With A Clean Credit Report" etc. Perhaps you have been laying back on the couch watching the tube and all of a sudden, you see someone who commences to tell you that you can have a credit report with a clean history in about 30 days or less.

Hold on to your wallet if you are thinking about calling them. No matter what promise these companies make, bad credit transactions are going to stay on your personal credit report. They cannot wave a magic wand and make your bad debts vanish; like magic.

What you are hearing and reading is a first class con job, being played on desperate people. Many of these companies have been put out of business by the FTC (Federal Trade Commission) and local states Attorney General. The sad part is there are those that remain in business and continue to rake in $1000.00s of dollars per month from unsuspecting people.

Even some of the companies still in existence are a fly by night operation. You pay them a fee from as low as several hundred dollars to a high of perhaps a thousand or more. They collect your money and the next time you call them the phone has been disconnected.

However, there are some that actually offer a legitimate service. But you are going to be paying them to do something you can do yourself. All they are going to do is take the list of your debts, fill in a form letter to your lenders and ask them to prove the debt. Hey! You can do your credit report repair yourself.

O.K. are you now asking how you clean up your own credit transcript. You are most likely not going to believe this but the process is simple, but it can take some time.

Several years ago, the Federal Government of the United States, made it mandatory that the consumer had the right to get a copy of his credit report once a year. So the first step you have to take is write or call the "Big 3", TransUnion, Experian and Equifax, and request a copy. By law they have to send you a current copy of your credit narrative.

If you should find false information reported by a creditor, your next step is write the company about their false information. By law, in 30 days, they must either prove the debt or have it removed if false. Bare in mind, false information might be dates, amounts, etc. However, if you find the reported debts on your report are accurate, this is where the rubber hits the pavement. Because they will remain on your report for 7 years or until you clean them up.

When you hear the outrageous claims made by these companies, the old adage applies; "If it sounds to good to be true it probably is."

In Part 2 of "Credit Report Repair A to Z" you will find out more information about how you can lawfully repair your own credit report and rating.

Though a lot of people are comfortable with going forward with credit card debt management all by themselves, not everyone is. There are people who don't really want to tread into the territory of financial issues (credit card debt management included). Such people generally prefer going to debt assistance companies for advice on credit card debt management or for getting the credit card debt management done through them.

However, even before we talk further on this topic of credit card debt management, it's imperative to understand that any external person or agency can only do a proper credit card debt management for you if you strictly follow the advice/guidelines that they formulate as part of credit card debt management.

These credit card debt management guidelines are generally related to controlling your spending (which basically means perseverance and contentment).

Going to a credit card debt management company or a credit card debt management adviser / professional is not meant only for people who are foreign to financial topics but is sometimes fruitful for other people too (who are going with credit card debt management all by themselves).

This arises from the fact that these credit card debt management professionals (as any professional) would have more knowledge in that field than anyone else that is not from that field/profession. So, firstly, you wouldn't know all the tips and tricks that the credit card debt management professional would know (and in fact this is something that you cannot read and learn overnight).

And secondly, it will save you a lot of time; because the person who practices credit card debt management as a profession would know about all the latest offers etc that are available in the market e.g. balance transfer offers etc (and hence you don't need to go looking for all this stuff all by yourself). All in all, a credit card debt management professional can help get you a better deal that might more than compensate for the fee charged by that professional.

If you look around you will find that there are hordes of companies and professionals offering credit card debt management services. However, the key here is that you choose someone whose credentials are already established (or who can prove his credentials to you).

One good way of selecting a credit card debt management company/ professional is to check with a friend or someone from your family, if they have used any such service in recent times. After all, references are the best way of building trust.

You can find numerous nonprofit organizations online who will claim that they can help you to solve your debt consolidation problem. Our aim in this post is to try and help you in looking for a debt consolidation nonprofit organization and then we will attempt to show you an example of a nonprofit organization which you may possibly desire to work with.

If you type in the phrase debt consolidation within your search box on the Internet today, you will find tens of thousands of different companies you could work with. When you are thinking about a debt consolidation nonprofit organization which you would like to work with, you need to think about whether or not you are comfortable doing it over the computer or if you would like to meet someone face to face. This is a critical question because you may feel more comfortable working with the one in person but there are many more options when you are looking over the Internet for a debt consolidation nonprofit organization. This is something which you need to think about right away as you begin your search for an organization which you would like to work with. This is a major step within your financial life so you need to make sure that you are putting yourself in the best possible situation. The next paragraph will focus upon an example of one company which you can work with either in person or through the Internet.

The first company which you may want to look into is Consumer Credit Counseling Services. This company is one of the biggest debt consolidation companies in the United States and it does offer free credit counseling. You will find much of their information when searching for debt consolidation nonprofit organizations on the Internet. This company has been around for many years and is well regarded within the United States as a company to do business with. This is a company in it for the long haul and these are the types of factors you will normally want to consider when looking for a nonprofit organization to work with.

Most debt consolidation nonprofit organizations do offer free services but you must also consider the cost of using their other services. A service may be free but higher interest rates or other fees could be incorporated into the overall fee structure which you would have to pay throughout the time you work with a debt consolidation nonprofit organization. This is something you should keep in mind when comparing the different organizations which you may want to work with.

A debt consolidation nonprofit organization can be a great resource for you to use but you also need to focus upon whether or not this is a solution which you want to use. Debt consolidation is a major step for anyone so you must think carefully as this is a major undertaking and you will be putting a lot of effort in faith with in this company. Some companies will tout that consolidation as a good move for you but you must think whether or not this is going to help you succeed in the long run financially.

Hopefully this article on what to look for with in a debt consolidation nonprofit organization as well as giving a recommendation for a company to work with has given you more information in determining whether or not this is the right step for you as well as whether to work with a debt consolidation organization or do it on your own.

Nothing will prevent you from being an identity theft fraud victim. These criminals can easily commit identity fraud because of the careless information-handling processes in the workplace, lenient credit industry practices, and the effortlessness of getting social security numbers.

But there are many ways to limit the risk of fraud by taking some simple precautions. The following are some preventive measures you can take to help you to avoid being the next identity theft victim.

	On credit and debit reports.

	1. Do not make it a habit of carrying all your credit and debit cards in your wallet at all times. It is also not advisable to use debit cards because they are more prone to losses to your checking account.

But you can have at least one or two credit cards and your ATM with you. If you are used to using debit cards, make the most of online access to your bank account to check your account activity regularly. It is best to report early signs of fraud to your financial bank or institution the earliest possible time.

	2. When using your cards in public establishments, be wary of how they are being handled. Pay attention on how these cards are swiped by the clerk or waiter.

There are some employees who are using non-detectable skimmers to swipe the card and get the account number data from a personal computer later on. They can use the information achieved to purchase online or to make counterfeit cards.

	3. It is not a good idea to use debit cards when you are shopping over the Internet. Instead of these cards, use a credit card instead. You are better protected if you use these kind of cards whenever you do some purchase online.

	4. Maintain a list of copy of all your cards. You should also have a separate list for the account numbers, dates of expiration and phone numbers of customer service and fraud establishments.

It is best to keep them with you at all times. Put them in a safe pocket of what you are wearing so you will have immediate access to them whenever the need arises.

	5. Do not give out any of your personal information over the phone, Internet or by mail. You can do this if you have enough trust on the person who will be receiving them.

One of the strategy that identity thieves use is calling out to their potential victims and telling them that they have won some contest. They will then tell you that you need to give out some personal data so you can get your prize.

	6. Do not dispose your receipts anywhere. Always try and bring them along with you. If ever you want to throw them away, tear them first and find a safe place to thrash it in.

It is not wise to put receipts on shopping bags when you go shopping. Put them in your wallet or purse to avoid having someone getting hold of them.

	7. Do not have your credit card number written your checks. Besides being exposed to dishonest persons, this is also in violation to some of the law in many states.

Take note that by doing this, you are more prone to being a victim of fraud.

8.Check the mail always especially if you are waiting for one of your cards to arrive. You never know who might be watching out for them and try to steal them when you are not looking.

If the card does not arrive at the anticipated date and time, contact the card company or the issuer to make sure that it have not fallen into the wrong hands already.

	9. Request for a credit report at least once a year. The law gives you the right to one free credit report each year from the three credit bureaus.

Your credit report will show drastic signs and changes if ever you are a victim of identity theft. You might find in them inquiries not made by you, along with new accounts that you did not request or open.

The sooner you notice that an identity fraud is taking place, the easier and quicker it will be to clean up your credit files and get back your financial capabilities.

There has been an ongoing skit on the David Letterman Show called "Stupid Pet Tricks". It was an aptly named bit because the things people teach their pets to do are truly silly. Letterman did so well with that skit, he followed it up with another series called "Stupid People Tricks." Well, when it comes to the dozens of credit card offers that you get in your mailbox every week, you might think that some of these credit card companies would like to be on the next series called "Stupid Credit Card Tricks".

These promotions that you get for credit cards seem to be playing on just about every tactic they can find to get you to take out yet one more credit card. You would think that the fact that credit card debt is a virtual epidemic in this country would let the credit card companies know that its time to get on the side of the consumer to learn responsible use of credit. Instead they do all they can to get you to have more, not less, credit cards and use them as much as you can.

We need to be smart consumers because as much as credit card companies try to make credit cards seem fun and happy and like big toys in your wallet, they are not toys. We should never forget that a credit card is nothing more than a way for the credit company to extend to you dozens of small unsecured loans that they will create credit payments on the fly to enforce through your credit card bill that will include high interest rates and additional fees as they see fit.

This is not to say that having a credit card is not a good thing. Good credit is one of the real assets any responsible adult will use to help make life easier and to make the necessary purchases in life. And more and more credit is becoming the currency of choice replacing cash and checks as the preferred method for paying for gas, at restaurants and any more even at retail outlets and grocery stores.

While the spread of credit as actual currency is a fact of life for us, it is also a major move by the credit card companies to take over the economy and to make you even more dependent on them. So the best defense is to take charge of your credit card life and make sure that you are the boss of your credit cards, not the other way around.

The stupid credit card tricks can be really fun to look at and sometimes enticing. They will appeal to your sense of school pride by giving you a credit card in your college school colors. You can get credit cards that give donations to save the environment, help the poor or create a college fund for your kids. There are all kinds of premiums, cash back concepts, frequent flier miles and gifts and toys that credit card companies will fork over just to lure you into getting more credit cards and using them a lot.

To put it bluntly, you and I need to learn not to be suckers for these deals. We can laugh at the stupid tricks they try to use. But if a credit card company is going to try to trick you into getting a card or using one, they are not doing business honestly with you. You want a credit card company that deals straight with you. They should offer fair rates that don't change at the drop of a hat. They should sustain a reasonable credit limit and not always be jacking it up to try to get you to buy more stuff on the card. And they should have good customer service and be ready to renegotiate your relationship with them so you are getting good value from their service, not just paying for a bunch of toys and frills that do you no good whatsoever.

By keeping in mind what a credit card company actually does and that credit cards are mature adult tools, not games or toys, we can keep in perspective how to use our credit cards and how to keep from abusing credit which will lead to the nightmare of credit card debt.

Every single year, a lot of us continue to take holidays. Holidays are an easy way to unwind, and move away from the everyday pressures of daily life. Over 1 / 2 of all American families take their holiday between April and September, and therefore they spend lots of money on travel. Be it worldwide or domestic travel, the different options can cost a lot of money before you decide to really pursue it.

And more besides. Add them all together and you have a lot of places that you can get debt – which can lead you get in over your head.

With so many debt options you end up with a lot of minimum payments in a lot of places. It can be hard to meet all the payments – and even if you are able to do so it can be hard to remember who you are paying what!

Since we know that missed payments can have a massive effect on our credit rating this can be a major issue. Which is why so many people like debt consolidation loans if they are starting to have problems meeting payments.

What Are Debt Consolidation Loans?

At their most basic debt consolidation loans are a type of loan you take out to pay off other debts. You take out a loan that is able to cover all your debts – and use it to pay off the companies you owe money to.

This then has all your debt in one place – which makes it easier to know where to pay and when, and often helps reduce the minimum monthly payments as well – making life a bit easier on your finances.

The advantages are obvious – especially if you are in financial difficulties with some companies. You can stop debt collections, phone calls, legal threats etc by simply having all the money you owe them in place to pay them.

Whilst such debt consolidation loans aren’t for everyone they are very useful for many people. Certainly worth checking out.

When it comes to your credit rating we have already examined just how important it is to your everyday life. So now that we know it is vital we should look at how you can improve your credit rating.

Getting bad credit can happen to anyone in all walks of life. It is all too easy to miss a few payments, or find yourself short for a few months because essential bills, such as your car or boiler breaking down, have come in.

Credit Score is All Important

When this happens and your credit becomes adversely effected it is essential that you take control again and not only minimise the damage done to your credit score but also help to improve it so that you can get any credit that you want in the future.

How to Improve Your Credit Rating

The first and most important thing to do is ensure that you catch up on all your payments. It is being behind on your payments that will give your credit rating a hit, getting them caught up again gives it a boost – or at the very least stops it slipping further.

It is important from then on that you start making at the very least your minimum payments at the most regular of intervals. Ideally you want to be doing this across a lot of different credit points.

So if possible take out a few more credit cards, or use some more you haven’t used. Only make small purchases on them and make sure to clear the balance each month. This regular payments shows the credit companies that you can be trusted – and by having it across numerous credit points you show you can handle more credit and so they will trust you further.

Also take you your credit report. Often problems with credit ratings can be companies that forgot to update payments you have made, or your details are wrong (address, name spelled wrongly etc). Human error does happen – and it is important that you catch it.

So get your credit report and check it for as many details as possible – that way you can be sure to keep your credit going upwards, not downwards.

Credit card debt is on the rise – with the economy still struggling more and more people are having to rely on their credit cards to help them, or are struggling to pay them off as they once were. But many people make things harder for themselves than they need to by not understanding what they are doing when they are taking out a credit card – or by not shopping around enough to take advantage of some great deals, happy to simply stay with their same provider. This is a mistake – because choosing the right credit card means looking at the APR. Without understanding how important APR is to your credit card you can end up costing yourself a lot of money.

The Importance of APR on Credit Cards

APR stand for Annual Percentage Rate – it is the rate of interest that is charged on any amount that you have owing on your credit card. It is (usually) charged on a monthly basis working out a pro rata amount based off of the APR for the card. Put simply this means that the higher the APR the more interest you pay on the amount you owe every month. So you want this to be as low as possible. The higher the Apr the more money you pay out – and this is where a lot of people go wrong on credit cards. They look at the various add ons and extras, such as air miles or cash back, that credit card companies provide and forget that the APR is what makes such a big difference money wise. Which makes finding a credit card with a low APR important. But don't be fooled by headline APR. Often these rates will only last a few months before reverting back to a higher APR, which is usually hidden in the fine print. Because of this it is important that you are always considering what the end APR will be – not what you get for a few months to encourage you to spend. The best thing to do is to use a FREE service to check out what credit cards are best for you, including the APR. We recommend using this great credit card match service.
